Painted Darters are a reclusive but ubiquitous breed of pygmy dragon. Males are the most often seen, since their acrobatic dancing and tail flashing between the branches is hard to miss. Females however are silent and elusive, lurking in dense undergrowth and the leafy canopy. Painted Darters are only seen during the early spring when they arrive in scattered groups in forested areas. Members of the group give off a variety of high-pitched cheeps to coordinate the flock more efficiently, warn of predators or for signaling. When settled into their territory the breeding pairs collect spider's webs, lichen and leaves to form a type of nest known as a serai. Once hatched the juvenile Darters have a fast growth rate to accommodate for the approaching migration; as soon as breeding has concluded the dragons emigrate from the forest in a matter of weeks.
